A MUD HOUSE IN LA PERA
La Pera (Baix Empordà)
At Bangolo, we have had the privilege of accompanying Oriol Balliu in a unique bioconstruction and self-construction project in the Baix Empordà, creating a house that has become a reference in the area. The technique used, cob, has left a mark on our way of working and has taught us all a lot.
Why choose Cob?
Cob, a technique originating in Brittany, Wales and some regions of Germany, was not our first choice due to the challenges it posed. However, it was the client who proposed this technique, after having learned it in Brittany in a workshop given by Laureant de Coquemount. Together we decided to explore its possibilities and adapt them to this project. This technique, which does not require molds or complex structures , allowed us to work directly with a mass of earth, sand, clay, straw and water to shape the walls of the house, creating authentic habitable sculptures.
We knew, however, that the risk of obtaining an inconsistent or visually disruptive result was real. For this reason, we worked with special care on every detail, prioritizing simple, low-visual-impact solutions that respected the character of the site, such as the passive gallery or the roof design.
Sustainability and comfort: the advantages of Cob
Not only is cob a practical and accessible technique for self-construction, it also offers significant benefits:
- Thermal comfort: Cob walls maintain a constant temperature throughout the year, cooling the house during the hottest months and retaining heat in winter without the need for artificial heating systems.
- Humidity regulation: The cob breathes, absorbing and releasing moisture according to the needs of the house, creating a healthy and natural environment without the need for dehumidifiers or other devices.
- Use of local materials: Earth, straw and other resources come from the immediate environment, which minimizes environmental impact and promotes harmonious integration with the landscape.
Recognitions
This project has been a continuous learning process. Self-construction presented challenges for both us as architects and the owners, who, throughout the work, acquired a deep knowledge of earth building techniques.
The collective effort was worth it, as this project has been widely recognized, including the Ecoviure de Manresa Award . This award highlights not only the innovative use of cob, but also the sustainable design that includes systems such as efficient heating, rainwater collection and a dry toilet. It is also important to note that this is the first house built with cob in the Girona region , a fact that underlines the uniqueness of the project.
However, the most valuable thing has been the path taken during the work, where Oriol Balliu and all those involved have experienced a profound transformation, not only in the construction of the house, but in our own relationship with nature and sustainable construction.
A reflection of our philosophy
This project is a tangible example of how architecture can transform lives. At Bangolo we focus on local materials, a deep respect for our environment and solutions that connect emotion with technique . Through this project, we have learned that each house can be a unique space with a soul, that not only welcomes, but also tells a story.
